“Lucas, here now.”  He starts running as the mortar bomb hits his old location.  “Thanks bro,” he says.

“We need to move back to base now!”

“Sir! Yes sir!”

“Let’s go!”  

We start retreating back to camp. Suddenly…

“MOVE, MOVE NOW LOGAN!” a voice hollers.  

We start running and I see something - IT WAS MY DAD.  

“I saw Barry.”

“What one, wait... Dad?”  Lucas asks.

“Yeah,” I reply.

“Isn’t he dead?”

“Yeah. I mean like a hallucination. But you know what just, just shut up and stop talking about him please,” I say as I start welling up with tears.

The backstory

It was a dark night when we were out on my 25th birthday.  I got a new car and to be exact it was a dodge, challenger, SRT8.  It was wrapped black with double white stripes. I was out with my mum, dad, brother and my dog Jack.  We were crossing the border back to North America. While crossing the border there was an attack. We got stuck in line and then, my parents were shot.  We just made it out and waited until the next day.

It was the day after the attack and we tried crossing the border again which this time was a success.  Soon after we found a sign that read accepting new recruits, U.S military in need. We decided to join so we could avenge our parents by taking down the Federation and killing Rico.

Boot camp

27/7/2013

We had the last of our records checked and then we were off to boot camp.  It was boring and really struggle heavy in the first few hours but we soon found some things to do in our spare time.  We would carve logs or sticks into weapons and then shank the training dummies. For our warm up we had to do 6 km runs around the meadow.  The trainers would pick on John a lot because he would cut corners on the runs and would prank the trainers extremely often.

U.S soldier

16/3/2014

Boot camp ended a week ago and we were now official soldiers.  Big boots, heavy duty vests and huge guns. Lucas and I were soldiers out on the battlefield with submachine guns.  I was extremely nervous out on the battlefield seeing millions of dead bodies around me with brains, blood and other organs flowing out.  I retreated out to the barracks and then accidentally shot Lucas in the left leg. I thought he was an enemy but then he started screaming.  I couldn’t tell him, I just didn't have the guts. I started crying and then Lucas came over limping and told me he was shot. I helped him back to the hospital and then we had been sent on in quarter of an hour.  Back of to the barracks is where we were going but then a stealth chopper came and collected us. We started screaming at them until one of the guys took his mask off and said, “You’re a Crypto now.”

You’re a Crypto now,” said the guy.

At this point we were still screaming but then he told us that the federation were planning to take over the world.  We already knew this but we still asked questions about it. He told me a quote that I’ll never forget, Life as a U.S soldier is hard but life as Crypto is even harder.  We’d be flying planes and helicopters as suppliers for the beginning but soon it would be out on the battlefield with all guns blazing. He even told us that we would soon be infiltrating enemy camps, warehouses and bases.

“Logan, logan,” Lucas screams.

My breath was taken and I didn't reply with what he was holding.

He shouts again, “It is my new headset that is just like the old one but with 60x zoom and night vision but now it also has, (takes deep breath) heat vision for smoke bombs.”

“When did this arrive,” I ask.

Than he responds, “Today it just got dropped off from the factory.”

Then the commander came and it was a long talk, “The federation had just started attacking panama leading out to the U.S.A and the fed are also setting off North Korea's nuke supply and where do you think huh, take a guess oh wait gotta be here because earth is taken over by the fed and America are the only ones left, you guys need to go out there with your dog Jack, Ben Jackson and Hesh Leaoki”  Finally we get to talk and all that is said is, “Ok, Ok.”

“Lucas you take out top left, Logan you take out the left guard buy the entrance, I’ll take out the right one and Hesh, top right guard.  On three 1, 2, 3.” Said Ben

North Korea sucks, it’s just snow everywhere,”  I said

“Shush, now we need to move those bodies by the entrance,” said Ben, “Then jack the next vehicle so we can enter.”

We begin dragging the bodies into the guards office as some guys try exiting.  Luckily they didn't see us so we ran back out with bright red faces and … “People exiting, positions, gyeognabgo-e taewoda jullae?” (Korean for “Could you give us a ride to the hangar”)  “mwoya, geuge haeg gyeognabgo ya?”  (Korean for “What one, is it the nuke hangar?”)

“Just give the damn car.”  Screams Hesh as we all shoot them.

“Stick to the plan guys, all we need to do is hack the nukes launch code and then get back the car to leave otherwise if it doesn’t work we you guys protect me while I hack it then we fight it out, got it,” explains Ben.

“Ok just drive, go,” says Hesh as I step down on the pedal.

The sun raced up as fast as a f1 race car on a straight.  It was really bright outdoors but our breaths still made huge smoke trails.  The snow was terrible because we first of all didn't have the time to get snow tires and we didn't have a roof on the jeep so the snow was everywhere. Once we entered we began driving to the drop off point.

“This is gonna be a long drive,” says Lucas, “Are we nearly at the drop off.”

“Shush, one false move and we are dead.”

We carried on driving and there it was, the drop off point.  We got out and grabbed the duffle bags from the back. Walking into the vault like door there it was the security check.  The dog's started barking.

“Pick up the pace guys,” I command.

Jogging down the stairs to the room all the scientists were working so we pulled the machine gun out and they were fleeing like pigs that were about to become bacon.

“Move now, they’ll have backup on us already coming,” says ben.

“Unload the equipment onto the command table while I, get the guns out now there coming.” Says Ben

“I’ll get sticky bombs.”  Yells Lucas but the gunfire blocks out his voice.

It was a long wait for the virus to be uploaded and ready for use.

Around 5 minutes later we had the virus uploaded and we were off.

“Get your night vision on because lights are out.”  Says Ben as I knock out the lights.

“We got the virus up and on sir and leaving the drop off now,”  Says ben to the sergeant.

We exited the base and suddenly the sky turned black.

“Stand down!” yells one of the guards as they begin shooting us.

“Shoot, Hesh now, SHOOT.”  Screams Ben.

I end up in driver again and end up escaping the jeeps but then some other vehicles came.  They had snowmobiles chasing us down like dogs herding sheep back to their paddock.

We made it to the pick up point where we were supposed to be picked up and oh my god.

“Get to the sub.”  Screamed commander Bill.

We all hop in as the sub crushes the front of the ice land into a thin layer of water.

“Sir we have gathered intell on the fed's plans, their next attack is on South America.”  Says Ben.

“Then we need all we got, get in contact with everyone and tell them to prepare,” Commander Bill explains.

“Even the final carrier,” asks Hesh.

Then Bill replies, “It’s all or nothing.”

“Max get the guns, were sinking this ship,” I yell.

“Shoot now, we got this,” screams Max.

The sky was dark just like it had been for the past few days.  Dark sky, foggy seas, we could barely see the other ships. It was like a horror movie or a fiction story.  It was only the second day of the fight and we were clearly losing, air supports down, escape boats blown and damaged engines.  Then all of a sudden…

“WE SUNK RICO’S SHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”  Screamed some guy manning the machine guns. We somehow started the ship back up and moved closer to shoot him.  The sky started clearing but however there was still a lot of lightning. The oceans were covered with blood and scrap but it was over, the war had ended.  Years of fighting, over.

Crypto day

It was the 21st of september and it was also now known as Crypto day.  The day where all the soldiers who went to war are now remembered. We had a whole new anthem and many things such as movies, books, tv shows and many more all about us.  It felt good to be the centre of the focus and the main everything.

Term 3 goals

Typing away and then, “Hey Jaqob.”  Yeah that’s me so in term 3 I am going to stop talking and mucking around in class.

I will always stick at what I’m doing next term and will show grit by not giving up on stuff especially like math.

In term 3 I hope to make it better than any other term at school so far.

I am going to do all of the above in term 3 and make it the BEST!!

Grit
Step by step, breath by breath, the walk.  The long walk left many with aching legs and destroyed ankles but I, Riley Burgiss, had something else.  I too had aching legs and busted ankles but another thing had hit me … I was literally breathless, no breath at all.  It was a real struggle climbing the hill but in the end I, and many others, had conquered the almighty Ruahine Range and reached Sunrise hut.

The wolf is a well known beast with many types, habitats and apparences so buckle up for this one.

Apparence

The wolf, a animal with many types so many appearances since there are so many types right.  Some
wolves are distinct like the like the arabian wolf and the arctic wolf, it is nearly impossible to think they
are the same type but some like the cascade mountain wolf and the gray wolf are harder to distinguish.  

Habitat

The gray wolf has a wide variety of habitats which are pretty unbelievable.  It lives in tundra, mountain
areas, woodlands, forests, grasslands and deserts. Here's another fact that I bet you didn't know.  
Around 7000 - 11,200 gray wolves live in Alaska but only around 5000 live in the all the other 48 states
of America combined (excluding hawaii).

Diet

Wolves are monsters for food but what is it that these carnivorous beasts eat.  A wolf is a carnivore so
it only eats meat. The wolves diet is mostly large hooved animals and herviborous herbivorous
animals like elk, doe, deer, caribou (reindeer) and moose.  Sometimes a wolf will also eat stuff like
beavers rabbit's and other small animals.  Did you know one meal for a wolf is the equivalent to 80
hamburgers. Wolves are also scavengers which means they eat dead animals that are already dead.

Lifecycle

Wolves are beasts but they have difficult, short lifes.  The gray wolves life span is regularly one year
because life is tough as a gray wolf especially for pups.  A gray wolf pup usually only lasts half a year
but the pups that survive then move on. After six months the wolf pups almost look like adults and
than are able to hunt food but under another wolves supervision or just hunt at the rendezvous site.

Population

Population a.k.a amount of wolf species left is a surprise actually.  The population for wolves was
terrible in 1907 because everyone was scared of the beasts they killed them and deemed them
extinct.  Then a few years later the population began increasing until they were just as popular as
before the incident. The overall population of wolves is 16,575 wolves overall in U.S.A.

Although there are many more wolves and many more facts that I haven't covered here I have
finished for this report so Riley (B) out.

Camp thank you letter

Dear Dad

Thank you Paul for coming to camp. This meant a lot to me and many of my
classmates for you to come. It was amazing to have you compete in our ping
pong competition and let me say your skills at ping pong are top notch.

Thanks for also helping me get the lollies otherwise that drive would have
been boring. Also don’t tell the teacher about the lollies (I mean it :( ).

You are amazing Paul with everything from ping pong to huge hikes that are
1300 metres high with the sky tower at 220 metres. That was an amazing
accomplishment for everyone.

I still can’t think of any way to thank you for coming to everything with me.

Amazon rainforest

Amazon Rainforest

You’re planning a trip to a dangerous rainforest so here's a question for you what would you bring, what would you do if you were trapped, how and where should you build your camp, what plants and animals can you eat and most importantly the location?

Where is it?

If you are interested in travelling to the amazon it is located northwest of Brazil and in another 8 countries so 9 countries in total.  The 9 countries consist of Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, colombia, Bolivia, Suriname, Venezuela, Peru and French Guiana.

Essentials

The wild is a rough place especially if you don’t have the correct equipment or materials so here a basic list of equipment you’ll need.  If you are planning a trip these are the number 1 things you’ll need

• Knife
• Tarp
• Canned food
• Bottled water
• Can opener
• Tape
• First aid kit
• Personal locator beacon (PLB)
• Radio
• Sleeping bag
• Matches

There are still many more things you should take but these are just the essentials for surviving in the wild.

Deadly Plants

Upon millions of plants in the Amazon today I will only be covering a few like the deadly ones and edible ones.  Starting with the deadly ones that you do not want to set up a camp near is the Nerium Oleander.  Even though it look like your everyday garden flower it’s not, once it’s touched it releases a toxin and can result in death.  It is said that Alexander the Great lost many soldiers because they ate meat skewered on the twigs.  Next is the Aconitum which is highly toxic and will kill.  The Aconitum is bitter and if it’s consumed the eaters mouth will burn and then your mouth will go numb.  The Aconitum is used for many things like take for example the roots are used as medicine but than the plant is used to tip arrows with poison.  Even though there many more deadly plants I’m gonna move onto the edible ones.

Edible Plants

 Now beginning on the first edible plant is Musa Paradisiaca A.K.A the banana.  You’ll find a lot of Musa Paradisiaca in the Amazon along with Piper Nigrum (The black pepper), some Cashews, Cocoa, Cloves (they look disgusting), citrus fruits and many more.

Deadly Animals

Now is the animals which again I can’t cover them all so just a few deadly and some edible ones.  Starting with the deadly ones is the Drumroll please, most deadly one of the bunch, Poisonous Dart Frog.  The poisonous Dart Frog is extremely deadly but scientists have yet to prove how it gains it’s toxin.  Scientists say it is possible that they digest plant or some prey that are either poisoned or poisonous.  It is impossible for the Poisonous  Dart Frogs to develop poisons because are held captive in their native habitat.  Next is the Brazilian Wandering Spider A.K.A the most deadly on the planet.  The spider is 5 centimeters longs so not that big right, well think again, that’s only body size, the leg span reaches upto 15 centimeters which is half a average ruler size.  The Brazilian wandering also has many other names such as the armed spider or banana spider.  The bite from this spider can be extremely deadly an adult nowhere near as close as deadly as it is to a child.  To minimize the chances of death the victim should take antivenom ASAP.

Edible Animals

Now is the Arapaima which is also the first edible animal. The Arapaima is a huge fish that grows to 3m and drumroll please, 200KG.  This fish is very odd as well because it as teeth on it’s tongue and teeth on the roof of its mouth so it can eat.  The Arapaima has a appetite for many things such as fruits, insects, seeds, birds and many mammals found at the water surface.  The Arapaima lives in slow moving rivers so it can easily breath out of the water like us humans.  The Arapaima is extremely fat as well and it usually takes many people to carry one of these beasts.  These fish are also sadly going extinct from the Brazilian waterways because of overfishing.  Now that that is done I’m gonna talk about the Tambaqui which has a few weird and wacky features.  The Tambaqui is weird in many ways but the weirdest is the fact that some of their teeth look like a humans human’s teeth which is disgusting.

This fish also swims in floods to eat fruits and seeds because it is a herbivore but the weird thing is that it belongs in the sub family of the carnivorous paranha piranha.  This fish has a diet of mostly fruit because it’s a herbivour herbivore and another fact is these fish cause some fish to decide on new habitat locations.  The fishes length varies as well ranging from 20 to 100 cm.

Tribes

There are dare I say it, tribes running around the forest shooting things with shotguns or bows and arrows.  These tribes also try to shoot planes that are flying overhead.  These tribes also have no contact to the outside world which you must get bored and lonely with just wood and grass to play with.  It is even said that some tribes are still undescovered undiscovered in the mighty forest.  Yanomami is the name of the largest tribe known in the Amazon leaving the little tribes in their territory to be killed.

Fun Facts

Now for some fun facts.

1. Did you know if the Amazon rainforest was a country it would be ranked 9th in size.
2. Did you know the Amazon is also called the earth's lungs because it supplies 20% of the worlds oxygen.
3. Did you know half of the worlds plantlife and animal species come from rainforests such as the Amazon.
4. Did you know the Amazon has been a thing for 55 million years but the Amazon river has only been for 11 million years.
5. Did you know the Amazon river is a freshwater river.

Conclusion

The Amazon (The Amazon is what this report was on just incase you didn't read it all) is a extremely interesting and massive place that you now know many things about such as the animals and plants.  This report only covered very few facts so if you are interested just go google some more facts.  Now that we’ve covered all the basics of the Amazon and survival you might stand a chance against the wild.
